Networking and partnerships

UNCTAD/TrainForTrade partner organisations gain access to a network linking institutions in developing and developed countries that are able to provide training programmes in the field of international trade and trade-related services.

These institutions benefit from the following advantages:

  • Access to high-quality training packages on trade related issues;
  • Exchange of training material;
  • Access to international experts;
  • Training opportunities for human resource development officials, course developers, and instructors;
  • Support for training management;
  • Exchange of experiences in the development of training programmes;
  • Access to the latest training methods and techniques;
  • Opportunities to take part in regional or inter-regional training workshops and seminars.

In exchange, partner institutions are expected to:

  • Participate and co-operate actively in network activities;
  • Make training information, material and instructors available to other network members, including on-line;
  • Contribute to the development of training material adapted to local conditions.

National and regional coordination

UNCTAD/TrainForTrade activities are coordinated in each country by a national or regional pedagogical committee. This committee consists mainly of representatives of various ministries, international trade and investment operators, port communities as well as private sector actors. The composition of the committee changes regularly according to the priority themes of each country. It is usually placed under the authority of a representative of the Ministry of Commerce.

Long-term development and sustainability

The start-up phase of technical co-operation programmes depends mostly on financial contributions from donors. Nevertheless, to help ensure sustainability at the local level, beneficiaries are expected to share some of the costs incurred. Hence, participating countries are involved, from the start, in the financing of projects.

Network co-ordination

The work of TrainForTrade is supported by the UNCTAD central support team, which is responsible for the management and distribution of training materials, technical support, training of trainers, regular updating of training packages, and expansion of the network.
